Compusa=Fleamarket?
Sunday, February 3, 2008, 10:46 PM - Rants and Raves

My weekly trek to COMPUSA left me in the doldrums this week.

In pursuit of the best deal on their remaining inventory, I enterd the store yesterday and was dismayed at what had occured.

No more redshirt employees (maybe they finally started watching Star Trek?).

No more shelves stocked with tons of goodies.

Just a lot of shrink wrapped junk like the photo above.

Well, that and Apple One Care plans and Microsoft Software.

And a large shelf full of monitor supports at 40% off.

And the laptops? Still hanging in there at 10% off.

Of course "off" is from full retail, which is about 10% higher than COMPUSA's normal prices.

The only upside is no one tried to sell me the bogus warranty/insurance...

The ideal paperless office setup
Sunday, February 3, 2008, 02:24 PM - Productivity

Students and clients often ask me what the most important piece of equipment is to have a paperless office and I always answer the same - monitors!

As this photo of my work office shows - I have three Samsung 21" Monitors mounted on a one pole, three monitor stand.

This setup mazimizes desk space, allows room for keyboards, scanners, mice, iphone charging stand and laptops beneath.

Each monitor runs at 1600x1200 so three of them provide 4800x1200 or effectively six side by side 8.5"x11" pieces of paper.

Each monitor is run by a different machine/laptop/computer, all of which are tied together to keyboard and mouse by using one fabulous piece of software called Multiplicity.

iPhone tip for websites
Saturday, January 19, 2008, 05:57 PM - PDAs
If your website is visited by iPhone users, you might want to add a bit of code (or a file) to your website to control the look of the logo that is placed on the iPhon users Home Screen.

Click here for a how to do.

Amazon strike #2
Saturday, January 19, 2008, 05:54 PM - Rants and Raves
One of my favorite retailers, Amazon, has stumbled twice now in 2 months. I recently placed an order for a video game for my kids - the order was sent to my house, which on average receives 4 to 8 Amazon pkgs. a month - so much that our UPS guy knows us on a first name basis and to come to our office when we aren't home.

That said, Amazon said our address "was insufficent to allow delivery"

so I wrote them pointed this out and this was the response (George Orwell would have been proud)

so I wonder

---
"Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com with your concern.

I am truly very sorry for any inconvenience caused to you due to this situation and I do understand your frustration in this regard.

I researched your order and learned that it was returned to us as undeliverable.

We processed this return and requested a full refund on January 18, 2008. We will send you an e-mail confirming the amount of the refund when it is complete.

Kindly note that, the carrier told us only that your order was undeliverable for an "unspecified reason."

Regrettably, some packages are returned as undeliverable through no fault of the customer.

I do understand that you may still want the item to be shipped to you. However, unfortunately, we are unable to re-ship orders that are returned to us as undeliverable. Please note that our system will not allow us to reinstate undeliverable order. I hope you will understand our limitations in this regard.
"

---

So I wonder if I place the order again if it will all happen again?
